TippingPoint is an exciting and influential art | science initiative whose mission is to 'harness the power of the imagination to help stabilise the planet'. TippingPoint was initiated by Peter Gingold in 2005 and grew out of a collaboration with Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute. For further information see their website [link].

TippingPoint is

a think tank | a creative workshop | a seminar | a network of artists, industrialists, scientists, curators, producers, thinkers and enthusiasts who wish to co-operate on action about climate change

TippingPoint 2007 took place at Oxford's Sheldonian and Exeter College 2-3 October 2007

Issues discussed at this year's TippingPoint were

How can we best comunicate climate change?
How can we reach large audiences quickly?
How can artists and scientists best co-operate to create work that will inspire people to change their behaviour?
How can we educate on climate change?
How can art re-present issues to do with mitigation and adaptation?
What will carbon free cities look like?
What is our responsibility toward our children and future generations in relation to climate change?

TippingPoint consisted in a practical exploration and critical reflection that allowed for dissemination of information while also advancing best practices on climate change art. The format was informal, open space, encouraging creative collaboration.

Artists noted that it was scraps, fragments, torn pieces of paper rather than large quantities of information that caught the artistic imagination.

If you have any scraps of information on climate change please email them to me (Gabriella Giannachi g.giannachi@exeter.ac.uk) so I can add them to climate change scraps in the hope it might inspire someone somewhere to write, film, photograph, draw, perform, compose a work on climate change.

Some conclusions highlighted that

Climate change is an ethical issue.
Climate change is about rights.
Climate change will lead to a new industrial revolution.
It is time to encourage others into positive action. We are all responsible.
