The University of Victoria Humanities Computing Conference/Workshop
June 23-28, 2003
The IAW
project made its academic debut at the American
Conference for Irish Studies annual meeting this
Summer in Minneapolis. Project PI, Matthew Jockers,
presented a paper titled "From the Parks of Menlough
to Menlo Park" which drew from resources archived
in the IAW collection to explore the literary works
of five Bay Area Irish-American authors. As part of
the presentation, Jockers accessed the IAW site database
via the web and demonstrated to his audience how corpus-
and text-based searching could be employed to provide
scholars of Irish-American literature with previously
unavailable insights into the nature of the canon.
At another conference for "Computing Humanists,"
held this past summer at the University of Victoria,
Jockers spoke about the process developed by the IAW
project team to convert styled Microsoft Word files
into Text-Encoding Initiative (TEI) compliant, well-formed,
valid XML files. The process automates all XML tagging
and simplifies the editing of texts in preparation
for database archiving.
